Pipe Gallery presents 《Body and Mind》, a solo exhibition by
ChangChang Yoo, on view through September 23.
Yoo has explored the complexity of human emotions and the
contradictions of lived experience through painting. His works feature
comic-inspired characters and playful scenes, yet beneath their lighthearted
appearance coexist seemingly opposing emotions such as loneliness and anxiety,
hope and loss, humor and sadness.
Rather than reducing the human interior to a single emotion or
narrative, Yoo constructs images in which multiple visual and temporal layers
intersect, translating the experiences of continual choice and human
relationships into a pictorial language.
His work focuses not on conveying a fixed story, but on revealing
the ways in which different emotions and memories collide and coexist within a
single image.

The title 《Body and Mind》 encapsulates the central concept of the exhibition. Here, the body
refers to the tangible form through which one inhabits the world, while the
mind constitutes an inner space in which memories, emotions, desires, and
anxieties accumulate.
Yoo regards body and mind not as separate entities, but as
interconnected conditions that continually shape one another and constitute
human experience. Within a single canvas, past and present, reality and
imagination, comedy and tragedy coexist, allowing viewers to move between these
layers and connect them with their own experiences and memories.

Behind the charming and playful imagery of Yoo’s paintings lies a
quiet contemplation of human anxiety, love, relationships, and loss, with
contradictory emotions naturally coexisting within a single canvas.
《Body and Mind》 explores how the body and
mind, reality and inner experience, the visible and the unseen come together to
constitute a life, while inviting viewers to take their time and engage with
the paintings through their own experiences and emotions.
