Cultural diversity is commonly understood as respecting different
cultures and backgrounds and living together in harmony. Taking a step beyond
this familiar understanding, the two artists turn their attention to the ways
in which we perceive and understand diversity itself.
“Things Before Classification” refers to the value of things that
have existed even before being named and categorized. Life, culture, and memory
were not originally meant to be placed within systems of classification.
Through various media, including painting, sculpture,
installation, and video, the exhibition reexamines, through the artists’ visual
languages, the intrinsic relationships and sustainability of beings that are
selected and ranked according to the logic of capital and technology.
